On a production line, these exchanges are mainly used for production monitoring and control as well as for maintenance. The data is collected by communicating sensors and sent to the PLC for the management of the manufacturing process and to configuration and monitoring software for the monitoring of the functional status and for the supervision of the production line.

The maintenance of the systems is strongly modified because from the curative or preventive maintenance, we pass here to a predictive maintenance where the analysis of the data indicates the optimal moment to replace a failing part.
We are entering the era of "just-in-time" maintenance...
